As these first look photos and posters reveal, Verna isn’t one to be played with. “You could say she’s the executor of fate or the executor of karma,” said Gugino. A storm begins, and Roderick comes to the narrator's bedroom (which is situated directly above the house's vault) in an almost hysterical state. Throwing the windows open to the storm, Roderick points out that the lake surrounding the house seems to glow in the dark, just as Roderick depicted in his paintings, but there is no lightning or other explainable source of the glow. The narrator is impressed with Roderick's paintings and attempts to cheer him by reading with him and listening to his improvised musical compositions on the guitar. Roderick sings "The Haunted Palace", then tells the narrator that he believes the house he lives in to be alive, and that this sentience arises from the arrangement of the masonry and vegetation surrounding it. The Fall of The House of Usher cast includes actors from previous Flanagan projects, such as Carla Gugino and Bruce Greenwood, while Mary McDonnell and Mark Hamill lead the newcomers. Throughout the series, the Usher family are haunted by the presence of Verna, a mysterious and ghoulish woman with a vendetta against the family, and its scream queen Carla Gugino who will be stepping into her shoes. The actress – who has already worked with creator Mike Flanagan on The Haunting of Hill House and The Haunting of Bly Manor – is no stranger to a good scare. Edgar Allen Poe’s original short story, The Fall of the House of Usher, is perhaps his most famous.
The bedroom door is then blown open to reveal Madeline, bloodied from her arduous escape from the tomb. In a final fit of rage, she attacks her brother, scaring him to death as she herself expires. The narrator then runs from the house, and, as he does, he notices a flash of moonlight behind him. He turns back in time to see the Moon shining through the suddenly widened crack in the house. As he watches, the House of Usher splits in two and the fragments sink away into the lake. It is revealed that Roderick's sister, Madeline, is also ill and falls into cataleptic, deathlike trances.
Rounding out the cast, Scandal and Grey's Anatomy alum Samantha Sloyan will play Tamerlane Usher, Roderick's eldest daughter. Meanwhile, T'Nia Miller – another frequent collaborator of Mike Flanagan – stars as Victorine LaFourcade, one of Roderick's illegitimate children. They're joined by Kate Siegel, Henry Thomas, and Rahul Kohli, as Camille L'Espanaye, Frederick Usher and Napoleon Usher, respectively. All of Flanagan's Netflix horror series so far have been rated TV-MA for mature audiences, so it's very likely that "House of Usher" will end up with a TV-MA rating as well.
Beyond the usual ratings flags of profanity, sexual content, and violence, Flanagan's shows also frequently tackle difficult topics such as depression, addiction, and suicide, so even grown-ups may want to brace themselves going in. There's also a healthy blend of both comedy and horror, as images of bloodletting and shadowy figures intermingle with some slapstick and a hilarious conversation about the merits of satin as funeral fashion. Though the clips are too brief to infer a whole lot of plot details, the trailer does make it very clear that "The Fall of the House of Usher" will be something like Poe by way of "Succession," a combination sure to please longtime Flanagan fans. The character names offer some clues to which stories "House of Usher," will draw from. Carl Lumbly is playing Auguste Dupin, who shares a name with the detective from "Murders in the Rue Morgue," and Kate Siegel's character, Camille L'Espanaye, is lifted from the same story. Then there's the raven motif on the poster and the presence of a character called Lenore, which are both nods to Poe's famous poem, "The Raven."
When the dragon's death cries are described, a real shriek is heard, again within the house. As he relates the shield falling from off the wall, a hollow metallic reverberation can be heard throughout the house. At first, the narrator ignores the noises, but Roderick becomes increasingly hysterical. Roderick eventually declares that he has been hearing these sounds for days, and that they are being made by his sister, who was in fact alive when she was entombed.
Filming officially wrapped on The Fall of the House of Usher in July 2022. There was a brief hold-up due to a misconduct allegation against cast member Frank Langella, who was originally cast as family patriarch Roderick Usher. Langella was fired after an investigation and replaced with Bruce Greenwood. Netflix shared the full trailer for The Fall of the House of Usher on Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2023, and it looks incredible.
